Phnom Penh (VNA) – Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Nov. 12 on the occasion of the 40th and 41st ASEAN and related summits.
Son said Vietnam values comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia and pays attention to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields.
For his part, Lavrov said Russia still regards Vietnam as an important partner in the region and hopes that the Southeast Asian nation will continue to act as a bridge helping Russia to expand its relations with other ASEAN members.
The two ministers noted with satisfaction that political relations between Vietnam and Russia have been maintained through conversations and meetings held through all channels.
They agreed to hold the 24th meeting of the Vietnam-Russia Intergovernmental Committee for Economic-Commercial and Scientific-Technical Cooperation in the near future to identify the directions of collaboration for the coming time.
The two sides shared the view that the two foreign ministries should continue to play their coordinating role in stepping up the implementation of the agreements reached between the Vietnamese and Russian senior leaders, and strengthen their ties, particularly in the implementation of the cooperation plan of the ministries.
Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Son said Vietnam is always attentive and closely monitoring developments, affirming Vietnam’s consistent position that all disputes should be resolved through peaceful measures in accordance with basic principles of international law. and the Charter of the United Nations, and that he hoped that the parties concerned would end the conflict and resume dialogue soon.
As an active and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam stands ready to help promote dialogue and seek solutions to quickly stabilize the situation in Ukraine, he added./.
