Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees are stuck in bomb shelters or seeking refuge in the apartments and villages of their relatives. Any location that provides relative safety from shelling, shelling, and street-to-street fighting. Most of these refugees rush out of their homes, with only their clothes on their backs. They quickly ran out of the essentials: food, warm clothes, medicine, drinking water, gas. Because they are in a war zone, most of them do not have access to humanitarian aid. The Ukraine Relief Network uses a network of Christian churches on the ground, deeply connected to local communities to find groups of people in need of immediate help. Aid is distributed dynamically through ‘nodes’ – field coordinators who also ensure mutual accountability and reporting on the aid provided. This decentralized network is able to respond quickly to needs in an ever-changing chaos of war by providing essential supplies, organizing volunteer drivers to evacuate people from hotspots, helping people get to the border, where neighboring countries provide longer-term aid.
The Ukraine Relief Network is rapidly expanding to include Angel Partners: individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations seeking to provide direct aid to refugees and get daily updates on the ground from people helped by through photos, videos on the AMF website and Facebook. Page. This active commitment to helping Ukraine also means Christian Ray Flores is unable to come to Russia under the current regime because a law was passed that makes it a crime to speak out against the war, punishable by a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
“My grandfather was Ukrainian, my grandmother was Russian. My two eldest daughters were born in Moscow and my youngest Kyiv. The consequences of speaking out against war are dire, but standing up against evil in this protest is not optional for me.” – Christian Ray Flores
